Roll up your sleeves

Working in the kitchen can be the perfect spot to work on math in a fun, hands-on way.  I have fond memories of making cookies with my young daughters, and little by little, including them in making more complicated menus.


Fractions (you can double recipes to make a challenge)

Direction following and the importance of understanding what is asked

Perseverance; sometimes our first attempts don't work out and we need to try again

Pride in accomplishments

Budgeting: When children beg for things like "Lunchables" or pre-made products, give them the challenge of calculating how much it would cost to make a similar meal if you bought the ingredients yourself and put them together.  They will be shocked to see how much you pay for packaging!
